Prof. Dr. Thomas Glatte
Welcome
Everyone has their own story to tell. And so far, mine has been anything but ordinary. I navigated my share of stumbling blocks along the way. But there was always one constant—the drive to enhance my craft and gain the skills to become a decent professional and expert in my field. I have never lost my desire to learn and, even now, I am still honing my strategy with each new challenge. Today, my mission as a professional and as a professor, is to help others to lay the groundwork for lasting success - professionally but also as a human being.
About me
Grown up in the city of Dresden, I am coming from a family with a 200+ year tradition in the construction and building industry. With such a background, I had absolutely no other choice than following my ancestors footsteps. After an apprenticeship as a building worker, I studied civil engineering and quantity surveying at universities in Cottbus, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Dresden. In 1996, I graduated as a civil engineer from the Institute of Construction Management at TU Dresden University of Technology, Germany, and received 2011 my PhD in engineering at the same institute. I am also holding postgraduate degrees in building law and real estate economics.
In 1996, I have started my professional career as a project engineer at construction sites in Thailand and India with Philipp Holzmann AG, the leading German construction company of those days. Subsequently, I have led numerous property projects in Asia-Pacific for BASF, the world's leading chemical company. A significant part of that time I stayed in Hongkong, a city which I still consider as my second hometown. With my return to Germany in 2005, the reach of my responsibility scope became global with added responsibilities and tasks every 3-4 years. From 2008 until 2022, I have been BASF's Head of Group Real Estate & Facility Management (resp. Director Global Real Estate). As of August 2022, I have joined as its CEO Familienheim Rhein-Neckar eG, a Mannheim-based social housing company and parent company of Immobiliengruppe Rhein-Neckar, a group of companies rendering a wide range of commercial and residnetial real estate services across Germany such as property and facilities management, real estate insurance brokerage, banking services, property advisory and brokerage etc.
It goes back to the year 2003, when I started to support academic institutions as a lecturer. Over the years I have contributed with presentations, lectures and workshops to several leading German institutions such as TU Dresden/EIPOS Dresden, University of Regensburg/IREBS Immobilienakademie, University of Stuttgart and TU Berlin. There, my main teaching topics have been strategic and corporate real estate management, property development as well as location strategies. In September 2019 I was appointed as the Professor of Real Estate at Fresenius University of Applied Sciences in Heidelberg, Germany. In this role, I also established the MaSTERTALK ReAL ESTATE series. What was started as an ad-hoc initiative with a few fellows during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, has turned now into one of the popular webinar programmes for real estate professionals and students.
Over the years, I have also published a number of articles and peer-reviewed scientific papers on a wider range of real estate aspects. Meanwhile, five books (in German and English language) on property development, corporate location strategies and the essentials of corporate real estate management have followed.
Additionally, I am supporting through EMPORIUM Group various initiatives that contribute to sustainability enhancement of our working and living environment through concepts and technologies that are different from traditional approaches. Investments, especially in case of start-ups, are preferred but not mandatory. Mentoring can be rendered if deemed desirable. As a person that loves international real estate investments, I am also engaged in various financing and property development projects in Germany and Turkey. The Turkish activities are driven through Swiss Capital Bosphorus Properties A.S. in Istanbul - an internationally funded company where I also serve as a Chairman.
I have also served from 2008 until 2017 as Chapter Chair and President to the Central Europe Chapter of CoreNet Global Inc., the leading international association for corporate real estate managers. After my terms as President had ceased, I continued supporting CoreNet Global's Central Europe Chapter and other initiatives in various areas. Since 2017 I am a member of Real Estate Advisory Council (Immobilienbeirat) at the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB Deutsche Gesellschaft für nachhaltiges Bauen).
